This study looks at the research education in universities and is aimed at assessment of the Baltic – Nordic Higher Education Establishments’ participation to the EU Horizon 2020 Framework Programme on basis of the open source data. The author analyses university interest in Horizon 2020 support for doctoral students’ training, correlation between university PhD intensity and involvement in research projects, correlation between Horizon 2020 success and World university rankings, participation comparison of Nordic universities versus the Baltic ones. The societal contexts for sound and music computing: Research, education, industry, and socio-culture

Abstract The paper addresses the various contexts that determine the societal framework for research in the field of sound and music computing. Four of these contexts are identified, namely, the research context, the educational context, the industrial context and the socio-cultural context. For each context, the major trends are analysed and summarized as short statements, thus providing a background in which the state-of-the-art and the challenges of sound and music research can be situated.

This qualitative research study takes a closer look at developing competent researchers and thus building research capacity within Europe. The rapidly changing research environment driven by globalisation, internationalization, technological advancements, and the use of innovative methodologies impacts how research is designed, conducted, and reported on.
